In case you don't know me, I like planning parties. Generally they are parties for my own fun and pleasure. The last two years I've thrown an Oscars party (people dress up, ballots are filled out, prizes are won), I've also done a Harry Potter birthday party for myself as well as a ninja birthday party for my stepson that was quite a success.
Recently, a friend asked me to plan a Firefly themed birthday party for his next big day. He had just become interested in the amazing-ness of the show that is Firefly and knew that I loved the show as well (my past 3 dogs names have been Serenity Jayne, Captain Malcolm Reynolds, and Inara River...I have other friends who have Zoe and Kaylee). I thought, sure, why not combine these two things I love?
I know this blog is about cooking and recipes, but it's my blog, so I can post about whatever I want. Lots of times I cook for these parties too so that's where I'm going to have the tie-in. When planning the party, I saw a lot of people who are fans of Firefly out there, but not a lot of people who have thrown themed parties that I could draw inspiration from. I figured I'd post this to help those other Browncoats out there who might want to use my ideas for their own shindig.
I created these invitations, printed them on plain printer paper and double stick taped them to a thicker brown, speckled card stock. I wanted people to have a bit of an introduction to the show and get in the western mindset. Let me tell you, for a grammar/spelling nut like myself, I had a really hard time making so many mistakes on that invitation.
My friend also wanted to make it a murder mystery theme. His significant other helped with finding the right
pre-fab murder mystery game and then I changed all the character names to be Firefly characters and added the space cowboy hint to it. I also ended up having to change the gender of a few characters since we had more guys than girls and then I added an extra character when we had too many guests for the pre-made game. I added a love triangle aspect. It was fun!
I tried to choose food that related to the show and subsequent movie, whether it was something they mentioned or something that just seemed to fit. Kaylee loved strawberries because they were such a special treat, Zoe is such a tough gal that she always needs her sustenance, and Simon, of course, has his birthday cake made out of protein packets (ours, I'm happy to say, was regular chocolate).
Every crew member had their own "quarters" in our living room. Each section had
two quotes from the characters that really encompassed that character.
We had YouTube streaming some videos from space framed by
Wash's toy dinosaurs in the "cockpit..."
...Inara relaxed in the lap of luxury on our couch with a ceremonial tea set...
...Kaylee was comfortable on her hammock hanging in the corner
of the engine room next to her tools, jumpsuit and mechanic manuals...
...while Jayne had Vera (his trusted gun) for back up and his famous
orange beanie made by his mother...
...River and Simon shared a bunk complete with River's brain
scans and Simon's medical tools...
...Mal had his old cowboy items on display...
...While Zoe showed off some war medals and wedding photo... ...and Shepherd Book was simple,
with his traveling things and his books.
Here is the entrance to our house. We made "crates" with the Blue Sun logo and my wonderful hubby made a gangplank to line our walkway. Wish I had a better photo to brag on his work because it was pretty darn awesome.
All in all, it was an awesome party. People came dressed as their characters, we ate Captain's Chow Mein, drank Mudder's Milk and had a mighty fine shindig.
