- 4 thick slices of slightly stale bread
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
- 3 Tbsp butter, separated
- maple syrup and powdered sugar to serve
Cut each slice of bread into 9 equal cubes. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, milk and salt. In a shallow bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon.
Melt 1 1/2 Tbsp butter in a fry pan over medium high heat. Do not let the butter brown. Quickly toss half the bread cubes in the egg mixture and shake off excess. Place bread cubes in fry pan and saute them until browned on all sides, about 2-3 minutes. Remove bread cubes from the fry pan into the sugar mixture. Toss to coat and remove onto a plate.Repeat with remaining bread and serve immediately.
NOTES: By the end, we weren't measuring the sugar and cinnamon, or the eggs and milk for that matter. We just wanted to get it all done so we could eat it. I stopped using butter in the frying pan and just got the good old spray Pam to coat the bottom of the pan every once in a while. It was quicker for me, since I was making so much.
I had to keep an eye on some pieces that got more soaked than others and make sure they were cooked well. They got a bit soggy so I made sure they fried a little longer.
I used Texas Toast type bread from WalMart. It was their Good Value brand and it was Texas Toast-style slices. I cut it and put all the pieces in a bowl the night before and left it out. They were stale, but not hard by the next morning and this worked well.
