Patriotic Drink

It's almost 4th of July! I was looking around online for some patriotic food and drink to share with you all. I made my Red, White & Blue Flag Cake last week. Now I am trying to expand my drink repertoire. Doug and I have gotten into specialty cocktails lately.  We watch Bar Rescue on Spike TV and they come up with all these interesting concoctions. They look like so much fun to make, but we A) don't have the tools, and B) that much alcohol can get expensive. So simple it is!

This is a non-alcoholic drink that can be enjoyed by one and all. I will admit that when I looked at the ingredients, I wasn't too sure. I'm not a sports drink person, myself, but this actually turned out really well. Well, they turned out. To be honest, they tasted good, but weren't exactly layered as much as they should have been...Oh, alright, they looked like purple Kool-Aid!

I think part of my problem was I bought regular Sprite without thinking (I am anti-Diet sodas. They are just nasty). The recipe clearly calls for Diet and I think that one word is very important. If I'm not mistaken, Diet sodas have a different density than their non-Diet friends. Therefore, when we tried to top off the red and blue layers with the white layer, if we had used Diet, it probably would have kept its layers a lot better. You can see the purple drinks in the background of the photo to the left.

Doug was able to use some of his Bar Rescue-gleaned knowledge and started pouring the Sprite over an upside down spoon into the glass (the Sprite hit the layers like rain off an umbrella). This worked much better and seemed to keep the layers better.

  • 2 liter Diet Sprite or Diet 7-Up
  • 1 bottle cranberry juice (not diet)
  • 32 oz bottle blue-colored Gatorade
  • 6 tall glasses
  • ice
Fill the glasses with ice cubes. Pour the cranberry juice into a glass, filling it just less than halfway full. Repeat with remaining five glasses. Very slowly pour the blue Gatorade over the ice cubes so that it layers onto the cranberry juice. Once all glasses are filled, top each glass off with the Diet white drink.
