Carol's Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is Doug's mom's recipe. It makes a HUGE recipe with tons of cookies. They taste great, even if they look a little thin and funny. Doug kept telling me I was making them wrong, to which I answered, well your mom's recipe must be wrong then (I was trying to do something nice for him and don't take well to being told I'm doing it wrong in those situations). I added some instructions that might help a little, but neither of us could figure out how to make the dough part a little thicker.
  • 2 cups butter or margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 24 oz chocolate chips
  • 5 cups oatmeal
Cream together butter and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture. Add oatmeal and chocolate chips. Mix well. Chill dough in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Remove from refrigerator and form into small balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

NOTES: The first batch I put in the oven, I didn't refrigerate the dough first (it wasn't in the original instructions). The cookies were very thin and difficult to get off the cookie sheet. Chilling meant they didn't spread as far when cooking, but I wouldn't say there was a very noticeable difference. I might try adding more flour next time to see if it gives me more dough to work with. Trouble is it's such a big recipe anyway. They tasted great, that's all I can say!
